The Gulf. Mobile & Ohio, like many of the Class 1 Railroad Companies of the 20th Century resulted from the combination of a number of smaller railroad companies. The Gulf, Mobile & Ohio was born on September 13, 1940 as a result of the merger of the Gulf, Mobile & Northern Railroad with the Mobile & Ohio Railroad. It's lifespan extended to August 10, 1972 when it was merged with the Illinois Central Railroad to create the Illinois Central Gulf.
